The Diverting History of John Gilpin, Shewing How he Went Farther than he Intended, and Came Safe Home Again. With Six Illustrations by Watts Phillips.
Author: Cowper, William Phillips, Watts
Publisher: London: Griffith & Farran 1852.
Description: 29pp plus 2pp publisher's catalogue. Bound in original illustrated card covers strengthened with modern paper spine, minor foxing but still a very pleasant copy with hand-coloured frontispiece and five hand-coloured plates. Scarce (only recorded at Edinburgh and the NLS?) work of the popular cartoonist Watts Phillips, with hand-coloured plates illustrating this popular tale of Cowper's. Phillips was one of the few pupils of the celebrated Victorian caricaturist George Cruikshank. The Diverting History seems to have proved a popular subject for illustrators of the period, but Phillips' edition seems to be one of the scarcest.
