Author: Burke, Edmund

Publisher: Washington: Ritchie & Heiss 1847.

Description: This is the original Document No 52 from US House, 29th Congress, 2nd Session, removed from binding, sewing and spine strong and holding, this item could easily be housed in a new cover. 366p original print, spine firm, contains a discursive account of inventions and patents, followed by various extended tables of patents granted, classified list of patents, list of patentees, patents expired, list of persons whose patents have expired, claims (#4348 - #4913 with reissues and additional improvements), etc. Contains also abstracts on international Patent Law. Burke writes: I am aware that there is a prejudice in the minds of a portion of the community (small I believe it is) against the claims of inventors. It is contended by some that patents securing exclusive rights to the discoverers of new machines or processes of manufacture are monopolies, operating to the detriment of the best interests of the community and existing against the true policy of all just governments; and therefore are to be regarded with suspicion, construed with great strictness, and defeated if possible. (5) Other gems: The United States, at this time, is supposed to have 20,000,000 of inhabitants. It is fair to presume that, upon average, it requires a bed for every three persons. This, then, would give, (say) in round numbers, 7,000,000 beds or mattresses. Much to amuse and challenge the historically interested IP lawyers of the 21st century
