Author: Hadrianus, Junius, Jonghe, Adrian de

Publisher: Antwerp: Plantin 1566.

Description: 134p with 58 excellent woodcut illustrations (6 x 6 cm), in a 19th century binding with marbled boards. Printed on very good paper, the impressions of the woodcuts are nice and sharp. There are signs of old repairs of wormholing on the margins of quite a few pages, and the last two leaves (text only) have been extensively and expertly repaired, leading to loss of a few words on the last page which contains the Aenigmata, making them even more enigmatic. Many of the emblems are dedicated to specific names, motivs include elephant, snakes, pine-cone, fish, mice, crocodile, etc. A nice example of emblem literature by a well-known writer and doctor
