Author: Registry of Friendly Societies,
Publisher: Not Published 1880.
Description: Six large and heavy ledgers, all written in readable hand, pertaining to the dissolution of mostly friendly and provident societies (ie. Industrial and Provident Societies) an early example of co-operative organisations, precursor of the modern One Member Vote, Exempt Charities, Community Benefit or Asset Lock Societies, and giving names of persons responsible, ordered by location and year, index volume included. Covering the period 1864-1922, this seems to be the fragment of some larger enterprise to document the winding up of these pillars of 19th century-early 20th century civil society, all thoroughly and bureaucratically dissolved and buried. The sheer variety and names and purposes is something to be seen, the handwriting is something to be enjoyed, and the bindings are all in working order, some strengthen with metal reinforcement to the bottom edge. All spines are working well, a few have been recently repaired with cloth, one is a solid vellum tome with metal reinforcements, one reads 'Industrials and Provident Societies Winding-Up', written in gilt lettering. Total weight approx 20 kilos, these extraordinary ledgers showcase the immense variety of grassroots community organising during the covered period. Some examples include the British Inventors Bureau and Trading Association, Progressive Press, Oxford Food Reform, Hope to Prosper, Happy Retreat, Who Would Have Thought It, Goats Friends, Charleston Household Co-op, Booksellers Provincial Association, Blue Bells of Scotland, Bath Self Help, Medical Benevolent Association, as well as a large number of workers guilds and early women communities, such as Female Friendly, Female Mutual Aid, Female Workers Co-op, Female Amicable Society, to name but an few, as the tally appears to be in the thousands. Also of interest from Plurabelle, a series of printed Annual Reports of The Chief Registrar of Friendly Societies, covering the period from the mid-19th century till 1933, which we currently hold in stock
