La Liturgie ou Formulaire des Prières Publiques; selon l\'Usage de l\'Église Unie d\'Angleterre et d\'Irlande; avec le Pseautier et les XXXIX Articles de Foi.

Author: Church of England

Publisher: London: Bagster 1840.

Description: 590p small format, bound in contemporary embossed cloth with gilt titles to spine, 10 cm. Spine a little frayed but firmly attached, joints firm, pages unmarked, overall rather good condition for a small devotional item of this period. Scarce French liturgy expounding the Anglican faith, published in London perhaps as late as 1849, according to the Oxford record. Bagster and Sons produced a number of French-language liturgies during this period; the BL owns one with 390p, 200 pages less than the present copy. The collation agrees with copies held at the NLS, Chetham's (who date it to 1821) and the Bodleian. Samuel Bagster (1772 - 1851) was the founder of the Bagster publishing firm. Educated under the Rev. John Ryland, he subsequently embarked on a "long and honourable career as a publisher of aids to the study of the Scriptures" which "earned for him the esteem of all biblical scholars". Although the DNB focuses exclusively on Bagster's pioneering polyglot Bibles of the early 19th century, works like the present one are evidence of a secondary desire to produce practical works for more common consumption
