Description: Original black calf notebook, spine height 13 cm, pencil holder defective, 180 pages with dense MS pencil writing, each page approx 30 lines, written in neat hand, some corrections, Grand Tour through England, France, Italy. Present diary ("Volume 1") ends in Florence, but detailled travel accounting in the back indicates that the trip continued to Alexandria, Jerusalem, Iskanderun, Trieste, Vienna, Prague, Cassel, etc, in the back an very pedantic appendix about miles travelled by different means (horseback, railroad, boat, etc), also very detailed expense accounting over 10 pages adding up to a sum of over $600, total mileage calculated 19.000 miles, includes separate expenses for passports. Author is setting sail from New York on July 11, 1857, detailed itinerary may permit identification of the author from passenger lists, diary present covers 11 July to 1 Nov 1857 (Florence). Traveller seems to have had a strong interest in art and museums and ecclesiastical buildings. Unique item.
