Author: Parkinson, Northcote

Publisher: Liverpool University Press 1952.

Description: large format hardback, blue cloth, first edition, frontispiece and many plates, worn and aged dustjacket with traces of old adhesive tape present, author inscription to front endpaper "To Nichols from the author" obscured by paper pasted over, but visible under light, additional inscription to back endpaper (as when opening the book from the back), "To Ann, to whom this book is, in reality, dedicated, in memory of a miracle that happened on 4th July 1952, from Squirrel, with dearest love, always." Ann Fry was married to Parkinson, who is justly famous for his funny law about work expanding to fill the time available. So, he clearly wrote a beautiful dedication upsidedown in the book for his wife, then forgot because it was in the back, and then re-inscribed it to his friend.
