Description: three folio sized ledgers, spine height 24 cm, bound in suede leather, used as an orderly home for newspaper clippings of the narrative kind, assembled most likely be a female reader (Lena's Mistake, How she found him out, A Marvelous Escape, Love and a Ducking, etc etc) One volume lettered "B & H D H" to spine. Name in ink spotted "Alice Beckwith" "Emily Burhaus". Volume 1 is only partially filled with clippings, remaining pages are clean accounting stationary. Volume 2 ("Day Book") is tightly filled with columns of newspaper prose, very occasionally we get a glimpse that the underlying pages previously served as an accounting book. Volume 3 "Sales" is much more promising with regard to what the newspaper clipping obscure. The paper (approx 100 sheets) here has a light blue tint, and one can lift the newsprint occasionally to form an impression that this accounting book has served in the tailoring (supplies) trade, as different kinds of cloth and notions are mentioned (Winterthur, cap, flannel, Manchester, wool, pins, needles, etc). One date in ink is 1863. Interesting project both for reconstructing reading habits with regard to newspaper texts (TEXT), and the economy of the textile (TEXT) industry. The volumes were acquired in California.
